Message from the President of the National Morehouse Alumni Association

Greeting brothers,

I hope that all is well with you and your families. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and commitment to the Association as we continue to reengage our alumni. Earlier this month we renewed our rivalry with Howard University and played in the first Nations’ Classic in Washington, D.C. I want to commend Coach Freeman, his coaching staff, and the Maroon Tigers for a great game. While we did not win the game, we were definitely well represented.

We have a few upcoming events that you should be aware of. Homecoming is the weekend of October 21, and we have a number of activities planned, including our annual Homecoming Golf Tournament and our New Orleans-style Jazz Brunch. Tickets are available now. Before that, there is an event of equal importance: the Maroon & White Gala and Centennial Concert weekend that takes place September 30 thru October 2, 2011. This event will feature a gala and a concert by our world-renowned Glee Club. Be sure to check the website for more information and to purchase tickets.

If you will be in Atlanta for homecoming, I encourage you to visit us on the Web at www.morehousealumni.com, call our office at 404-215-2657, or come by and visit us.

They lived in the same place, at the same time, but in very different worlds. He was black. She was white. He was a champion of racial equality who laid the groundwork for the Civil Rights movement. She won the Pulitzer Prize for a book widely regarded as racist. Yet, for years, the author of “Gone With the Wind” secretly corresponded with the legendary president of one of the finest black institutions of higher learning in the nation, Morehouse College – and her anonymous donations provided medical educations for more than 40 African American doctors. A carefully guarded secret for decades, this remarkable, unlikely friendship between Margaret Mitchell and Dr. Benjamin E. Mays finally comes to light – as Andrew Young reveals new details about the fascinating little known story of two of the 20th Century’s most influential figures, and how their quiet friendship affected not only each other, but the entire country.

Dear Morehouse Men,

Being true to President Franklin’s vision of the Renaissance Man being Well-Balanced, GLAMMA has formed the Morehouse Alumni “Athletic Club”, a virtual facility devoted to the physical health of our alums. We will include a variety of healthy activities once a week, to include walking, cycling, jogging and whatever other activities you deem fun.

Our initial Kick-off activity will be a self-paced walk around the track at Ruben Ingold Park in View Park on Mt Vernon Drive @ Verdun, overlooking Stocker and LaBrea (SE corner). We will meet at 6:30 PM THIS THURSDAY, Sept. 1. The newly refurbished track includes isometric stations, a view of downtown LA and on a clear day, the ocean. For community visibility, wear some Morehouse paraphanalia–t-shirt, cap, etc.–and BRING WATER & a SWEATSHIRT.

Join the Morehouse Alumni Athletic Club for your health. Have fun being Well-Balanced. Be a Renaissance Man!

Morehouse College prays for the safety of her sons, families, faculty, staff, parents, trustees and supporters

As the East Coast braces for Hurricane Irene and her impact, we ask all members of the Morehouse family to pray for the health and safety of our brothers and sisters. As you know, this weekend was to have been the official unveiling of the National Monument and Memorial Concert to honor Dr. King in Washington, DC. President Franklin, his family and several members of the College’s Advancement team travelled to Washington, DC for the festivities.

Although, some event staff remain in the area, please know that all are safe, but solicit our prayers. We also encourage you to pray and reach out to those Morehouse families on the east coast, from North Carolina to New York and Boston area, who are in the path of the storm.

Please see the statement released on yesterday by the College regarding the POSTPONEMENT of the MLK Concert:

Morehouse College Memorial Concert to King and Tribute Postponed Due to Inclement Weather

(AUG. 26, 2011)-WASHINGTON, D.C. – Morehouse College has postponed its Memorial Concert and Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. following President Obama’s urging for those in the path of Hurricane Irene to take heed. The governors of Maryland and Virginia have issued a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm. The Concert was scheduled for Sunday, August 28 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

The College has been closely monitoring the forecast and actions taken by FEMA and other emergency management groups and determined that postponing Sunday’s concert is in the best interest of safety for everyone involved.

“The safety of our patrons and all parties involved in this worthwhile effort has always been most important to me and the Morehouse College Board of Trustees,” said Robert M. Franklin, president of Morehouse College. “With the postponement of the King Memorial unveiling, and our connection to it, we determined that moving the date of our concert is the best decision.”

The Memorial Concert and Tribute, which willl honor Stevie Wonder and Congressman John Conyers for their roles in leading the charge to make King’s birthday a national holiday, still will take place at The Kennedy Center. The new date for the Concert will be announced once it has been determined.

On behalf of Dr. Franklin, we thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Sincerely

Henry Goodgame

Where Are You !!!

Time To Renew Your Membership !!!!!

Greetings my brothers,

The momentum within the Association is strong. We are now ready to move forward with the first phase of a three-part strategy of re-engaging our alumni, rebuilding our alumni, and reclaiming our alumni. This year we will focus on re-engaging our alumni. This year we will continue to focus on extending the connection among our alumni. We’ll employ Facebook and Twitter along with other enhanced communication methods and social media that our younger alumni are using to stay engaged.

Some of the highlights of this past year were:

· a more aggressive social media campaign to reach our younger alumni,

· distribution of an electronic newsletter, which will soon be distributed monthly,

· partnering with local chapters across the country to plan and implement local events,

· streaming the first live “State of the College Address” given by Dr. Franklin,

· 300 Morehouse Men campaign which raised more than $40,000 for seniors,

· increasing collaboration between the College and the Association and

· boosting our alumni giving at the College to an all-time high of 32%.

Consider reengaging yourself and become a member today. We could use your time and your talents.

Fraternally yours,

Kevin R. McGee, ’93

National Alumni Association President
