Message from the President of the National Morehouse Alumni Association

Greeting brothers,

I hope that all is well with you and your families. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and commitment to the Association as we continue to reengage our alumni. Earlier this month we renewed our rivalry with Howard University and played in the first Nations’ Classic in Washington, D.C. I want to commend Coach Freeman, his coaching staff, and the Maroon Tigers for a great game. While we did not win the game, we were definitely well represented.

We have a few upcoming events that you should be aware of. Homecoming is the weekend of October 21, and we have a number of activities planned, including our annual Homecoming Golf Tournament and our New Orleans-style Jazz Brunch. Tickets are available now. Before that, there is an event of equal importance: the Maroon & White Gala and Centennial Concert weekend that takes place September 30 thru October 2, 2011. This event will feature a gala and a concert by our world-renowned Glee Club. Be sure to check the website for more information and to purchase tickets.

If you will be in Atlanta for homecoming, I encourage you to visit us on the Web at www.morehousealumni.com, call our office at 404-215-2657, or come by and visit us.

They lived in the same place, at the same time, but in very different worlds. He was black. She was white. He was a champion of racial equality who laid the groundwork for the Civil Rights movement. She won the Pulitzer Prize for a book widely regarded as racist. Yet, for years, the author of “Gone With the Wind” secretly corresponded with the legendary president of one of the finest black institutions of higher learning in the nation, Morehouse College – and her anonymous donations provided medical educations for more than 40 African American doctors. A carefully guarded secret for decades, this remarkable, unlikely friendship between Margaret Mitchell and Dr. Benjamin E. Mays finally comes to light – as Andrew Young reveals new details about the fascinating little known story of two of the 20th Century’s most influential figures, and how their quiet friendship affected not only each other, but the entire country.
